Sofie Steegen Belgian, b. 1996

Sofie Steegen (1996) is a ceramic sculptor and painter based in Ghent. Her work spans ceramic tile paintings and bas-reliefs, where form and color emerge through an intuitive dialogue with her materials. Sofie draws inspiration from eclectic sources, ranging from historical artifacts to whimsical trinkets, often infused with a sense of innocence and playfulness. Her artistic universe is rooted in themes of eroticism, mythology, and the natural world.

In her bas-reliefs, she introduces seemingly naïve characters (alter egos) into scenes that evoke a Libertine spirit. Yet, beneath the surface, am- biguity reigns. The nude body takes center stage, and the boundaries between man and woman, human and animal, begin to dissolve, in- viting the viewer into a space of uncertainty and curiosity. Sofie lived and worked for a year in Marseille. The spirit of the South, its warmth, sensuality, and sun-soaked charm, permeates the collection. In her latest series, she introduced the timeless theme of 'the still life'.
