Carlos Eggermont: Quintessence

9 January - 8 February 2026
Overview

Carlos Eggermont (Ghent, b. 1933) trained in decorative arts in Ghent, but was quickly noticed and went on to establish himself as a dealer in designer furniture and as a self-taught interior architect. From his early thirties onward, he has also painted continuously, for nearly 70 years now. Eggermont seeks to decipher the human condition, to capture the chaos inherent in humanity. His works are detached from the dimension of time, as they dig toward a fundamental core within the human being, a core which, according to C. Eggermont, has not evolved significantly over the course of history.

A key concept in the work of Carlos Eggermont is the human primate: human and animal at once, driven by instinct, impulse, and illusion. Through layer upon layer, he peels away conventions and appearances until the core is exposed; the human being, stripped to its essence. Carlos finds affinities in form and expression with African art.
